Shawn Shurig was charged with two counts each of burglary, criminal mischief, theft, and single counts of resisting arrest and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, Atlantic City police said.

Shurig is accused of breaking into and damaging two vehicles about 7:45 p.m. on Sunday.

As officers arrived on North Bellevue Avenue, a witness pointed out a possible suspect, police said.

Patrol Officer Robert Reynolds told Shurig he was under arrest and the suspect began to yell and refuse to comply, according to Lt. Kevin Fair, a police department spokesman.

As Shurig was walked to a patrol car, Officer Wen You began to conduct a search, police said. Shurig began to pull away and then kicked Officer Reynolds several times before an unsuccessful attempt to spit on him, according to Fair. After sitting down in the backseat of the patrol car, Shurig again kicked Officer Reynolds several times, Fair said.

Evidence from the car burglaries was located in Shung's possession, Fair said.

Shurig was released on a summons with a future court date.
